Checking In

Good morning students,

Here is a bit more information for each class.

English 100

As I spoke about in class, your school portion of the mark is based on your work habits.  You filled out one self-assessment sheet earlier. Now I would like you to fill in one more. Please complete this sheet and email it to me by the end of the week. Please remember also to post your potential writing topics on the Moodle page this week. I notice Dr. Weston is providing positive comments for each one.
As you can see, the sheet condensed when I tried to put it in the blog. You don't have to fill it in, but use the ideas to write a paragraph or three short answers and email them to me. Please remember if you are going to google share, you should share to my gmail address, which I am not posting here. Or you can put it in the body of the text of you email to my school email.

Thinking
I can analyze my own assumptions and beliefs and consider views that do not fit with them.
I can evaluate the credibility of different sources of information.
I can experiment with different ways of writing.
I can make writing choices that will help me create my intended impact. If they don’t work, I can change what I am doing.
Communicating
I can share information about an important topic in class.
I can tell something I’ve learned from readings in discussion and tell how it connects to my experiences.
I can summarize key ideas from readings and what others have said and tell the ways I agree or disagree when speaking in class.
I respond to direct questions posed by Dr. Weston in class by putting up my hand.

Self Determination
I can persevere with challenging tasks.
I take the initiative to inform myself about controversial issues.
I can solve problems myself and can identify when to ask for help.
I take action to support diversity and defend human rights.
Evidence of Learning: Based on aspects in the above checklist, what are some examples of your thinking, communicating, and self-determination that I can see?
Goals for Improvement: Based on aspects in the above checklist, what are some examples of your thinking, communicating, and self-determination to improve? What are your next steps?
Assignment of a Percentage: Based on the above checklist, if you had to give yourself a percentage, what percentage would you give yourself? Use examples to justify the mark.

Creative Writing 10

Hi writers,
Here are some answers to some emailed questions:
1. You may send four or five of your best poems or up to seven.
2. If your poems are locked in the school, you will have to hand them in later. That's OK.
3. If you missed the self check sheet at school, here it is.

I Can Write a Poem
Creative Writing 10

I can write a poem with a controlling idea, on a mature topic
I can carefully choose details.
I can try to make an impact on the reader – sense of audience.
I can use some effective poetic devices and imagery.
I can have some vitality and variety in my language to create a strong visual description.
I can write with a sense of voice.
I can try different structures, or try repetition.
I can write a clear sequence in a clear direction.
I can create a sense of closure at the ending.
I can try to use line breaks for effect.

Although we cannot make the little books at school, if you like crafts, and have some thread, a needle, some paper for the cover, and art supplies to decorate the cover, you can at home.
If you want to make your own little chapbook at home, here it how:

First Week at Home During Covid-19

Hello students,

Here is the blog I haven't used in seven years. Here I will post links and lessons in the coming weeks and months.  I think it would also be fun to try Zoom classes. Please let me know what you think.

You have finished revising your poems, I think. If you scroll way down this document to page 63, you will see the poetry rubric I will be using to mark it.
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/education/administration/kindergarten-to-grade-12/performance-standards/writing_g10.pdf
Do you remember the list I gave you of questions to ask yourself when revising your poem? It might be in your locker. Are there words that clink? etc.  Here is a chapter by the poet, Georgia Heard, who made that list, on revising poems:  https://s3.amazonaws.com/aawuploads/WebAssets/86/409/RevisionToolBox_chapter3.pdf?636938804125208695
Please share your best poems by next Monday. We wrote about 7, so just share your best 4 or 5.

Ukulele 8

Congratulations! You are done! Here is Spring Song by Mendelssohn to celebrate.
If you have a ukulele at home and still feel you are an absolute beginner, or want a review, here is an almost free deal ($1) from the writer of Booster Uke.
